The Massie Affair or Outrage on the Ala Moana Road Mixed Media Collage

The Massie Affair
Originally uploaded by Paper Fields
I made this collage some time ago upon reflecting on the events of the Massie Affair. A young white Navy wife, Thalia Massie, left a Honolulu party late on September 12, 1931. What happened that night triggered rape charges against 5 non whites, protests of innocence, and a trial in the media spotlight, with superstar attorney Clarence Darrow that all culminated in murder. Thalia Massie was from a prominent American family. Her mother was the niece of Alexander Graham Bell. At the time, this was a media sensation with William Randolph Hearst fueling the flames of racism.

What really happened to Thalia Massie? American Experience on pbs produced an insightful documentary on the Massie Affair. Visit my Etsy shop at Paper Fields where you can find out more and also purchase this mixed media collage .

My friend, Joon, makes these adorable thumbtacks. They feature a 1950s theme and would be the talk of any kitchen! Oh so retro chic! To see more of Joon's very creative work, be sure to visit her Etsy shop.

Jessie Has Done It Again

My friend Jessie is lovely person and an outstanding artist who works in a variety of mediums including acrylics, watercolors, and pen and ink. Her use of color is amazing. From ACEOs to art prints to handmade cards, every piece is a work of art to be cherished.

This ACEO is one in a set of 3. Jessie was inspired by those old movie theater concession stand commercials, where the soda and popcorn sing "Let's all go to the Lobby". Visit her Etsy Shop and you won't be disappointed!

Red Boat by Robert Knudsen

Red Boat

My brother, Bob, is a well known East Coast painter with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in painting from The Maryland Institute College of Art. He paints the American landscape directly from nature with the objective of conveying the experience of life, light and movement to the viewer. He has participated in many exhibitions and is gallery represented. Click the pic for a larger view.

I chose to feature Red Boat because it reminds me of the many happy times we spent at Deep Creek Lake in Western Maryland. You can see more of Bob's work at American Paintings Online

Sam's Art

B. J. and Me

Sam is an extremely talented artist and the ACEO above is one example of his work. See his artistry at his Etsy Shop, B. J. and Me.

This is a print of a larger piece entitled "Groove-it". It is a tribute to the era of the sixties. As in most of my works, my dog, Baby-Jayne is in this painting. I decided to put her in the driver's seat of this painting, because she always likes to be in charge, but she is also floating around in a few more spots.

Jessie's Art

J. B. Guess & Co.

This is an original ACEO art card, created using watercolor markers, prismacolor pens, and a fine point micron pen. It is an abstract view of Central Park in New York City at midnight. Jessie painted the buildings using bright colors to represent the colorful and exciting urban lifestyle. If you look closely, you'll see that the Empire State Building is celebrating Valentine's Day by displaying a giant red heart in lights on the side of the building.
